Pirates of the Caribbean – Arrr or Nay?
The original Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the Disneyland Resort turned 50 last year amid controversy over changes to the ride. A few years ago Captain Jack Sparrow was added to appeal to new fans of the film franchise. Then, last year the resort announced they would be changing the Auction scene due to its depiction of human trafficking. The initial reaction to the most recent change was mixed, but I think we can all agree the decision to err on the side of not supporting themes of trafficking was the right one.
We, the Disney diaspora, only get to experience the rides occasionally, and we find joy in the memories we hold of the first time we rode the ride. I’ll be at Disneyland next week, riding Pirates for the first time since Red’s scene was updated (and since Red began walking the park!), and I can’t wait to see it for myself!
So, what do you think of these changes? Are the Imagineers messing with your childhood, or is the attraction’s evolution a new and exciting experience?
