My Childhood Dream Has Come True!

I’ve always been a total sci-fi nerd. At 6 I was running around the house as the USS Enterprise zoomed across the screen during the opening credits of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I watched movies like Tron, The Last Starfighter, and yes, even Mac and Me. I saw ET far too early in life (I definitely thought it was a horror movie), and discovered MST3K in junior high (imagine my excitement when I realized I went to the same college as Joel Hodgson!).

But it was my first movie, taken in at a drive-in theater when I was less than a year old, that would define my sci-fi fandom; that movie was Return of the Jedi. I watched the movies all the time, reciting Yoda’s lines, laughing at Han’s offense when called a “nerf herder,” and trying to figure out why Mufasa was also Darth Vader. I always dreamed of walking through the Millennium Falcon, activating my lightsaber, and challenging Boba Fett to a final duel on Jabba’s sail barge.

When I discovered Star Tours at Disneyland, I flipped. I mean, we WENT. TO. ENDOR. Really. Physically. Truly. I was there guys. I met our pilot and everything.

But today, everything changes. Everything is plussed. Today Galaxy’s Edge opens at the Disneyland Resort! Of course, only those who were able to get a reservation during the hour and forty-five minutes they were available weeks ago will be able to get in. Wednesday night the Disney Parks Blog hosted a live stream event, letting the world experience the dedication of the new 14-acre land at Disneyland. Of course, everyone was there: George Lucas, Billy Dee Williams, Mark Hamill, and Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, gave a wonderful tribute to Peter Mayhew, saying “Peter, this one’s for you” before hitting the beloved “hunk of junk” to start ‘er up. I’ll be honest; I teared up.

The child in me is beyond ecstatic today, and the adult in me is clamoring to fork over hundreds of dollars to experience Galaxy’s Edge for myself. I want to devour a roasted Endorian tip-yip salad and drink all the blue milk. I want to assemble a Rex droid and dance to his tunes at Oga’s Cantina. But mostly, I want to create my own Star Wars story, a story where I fly the Falcon, a Kyber crystal chooses me, and I sneak around avoiding discovery by Stormtroopers.

Are you visiting Galaxy’s Edge this year? What are you most looking forward to? Will you drop your $200 on a lightsaber, or on some of that blue milk?
